Whakawhanaungatanga Camp
15th - 16th February This year's camp was held at Te Kopuru School due to Redhill Camp under going a refurbishment. It was very successful with the students working together, problem solving and developing interpersonal skills. Tuesday we had Tabloid Sports, Seniors - Night Tag-like Chess, a team moves across a chess board in turns to try to take the other team out , Tie the knot-a line of students holding each others piece of rope in-between them and try to tie a knot in the middle rope without letting go of the rope, Key Punch-circles of 1-30 are scattered on the ground and they have to step on all the numbers and then the next person has to step on them in the same sequence, Tank Commander-students are paired up into teams, one blind folded and inside a circle with obstacles and bombs they can pick up and throw at other paired students, the other teammate of the pair is outside the circle giving them instructions to eliminate the other teams , Toxic Waste is a thinking game where they have a circle that they can't step into, a bottle full of sand in the middle and a platform with ropes attached also in the circle, the idea of the game is to get the bottle on top of the platform and carry it with the ropes around an obstacle course and back again without touching the bottle, Mine Field-teacher sets up an invisible path on a checkers board, if the student goes off the path they are out and the next student has a turn remembering what the student did before them, Blanket Volleyball-volleyball but without using hands but a blanket, a team of 5 each side of the net held the blanket firm and flung the ball over the net scoring just like volleyball, and Helium Rod- hula hoop and a rod, teams only using their fingers to hold the rod slowly raising it as it goes up they are astonished how it moves on its own with only little pressure. Juniors - Blind Walk-Paired up, one blindfolded the other leading them around an area of the school with the blind folded student trying to identify obstacles using their other senses besides their sight. Mine Field-Paired up, one blindfolded the other leading them around a maze of obstacles without any collisions, with many more games including... Bull Ring, Handle With Care, Mission Impossible, Electric Fence, Spilly Billy, Fill the Bucket. The students and teachers had heaps of fun. We had a shared dinner that evening followed by a parent meeting, and finally a sleep over. Wednesday we had more Tabloids Sports in the morning and then after lunch they all participated in the Burma Trail, where they had to pair up and one student was blind folded and was given instructions how to go through the trail from their other paired teammate, across wooden blanks, through tree stump's, rope bridges, hurdles, and many other obstacles of the junior playground, then when they got to the end of the course they swapped over the blindfold and started again.

Matariki
On the 14th - 16th of June, Te Kopuru and Aranga Schools combined to celebrate Matariki at Matatina Marae, Waipoua and Aranga School. This is part of our Social Science, Arts, Technology and Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC) Curriculum. The learning focus of Matariki for this year is “Te Kohinga Kai” (food gathering) and “Manaakitanga” (sharing). Our Senior Students (Years 5, 6, 7, and 8) traveled to Aranga, on the 16th June, and stayed at Matatina Marae, Waipoua, and also at the Aranga School Hall. Over the two days, they participated in the gathering of ‘kai moana’ and ‘kai whenua’ (food from the sea, food from the land). Our Junior School remained at the School. However they participated in their own contribution to our Unit of study. On Wednesday the 15th, they were involved in the making of Pao (small flax food baskets), also they made ‘Takakau” (maori flat bread) and, “Paraoa parai” (fried bread). These they took to Aranga on the 16th as part of their contribution of” Manaakitanga” (sharing).
